Additionally, many people continue to believe that homosexuality is about nothing but sex, considering it to be merely a sexual perversion. The reality is that homosexuality is multidimensional, and is much more about love and affection than it is about sex. And this is what gay relationships are based on: mutual attraction, love and affection and sex. Homosexual people should be allowed to marry. Usually, people think marriage is an institution between one man and one woman. Well, that is the most often heard argument, one even codified in a recently passed U.S federal law. It seems that if the straight community cannot show a compelling reason to deny the institution of marriage to gay people, it should not be denied. The concept of not denying people, their rights unless people can show a compelling reason to do so is the very basis of the American ideal of human rights. The second argument about same-sex marriage is that same-sex couples are not the optimum environments in which to raise children. Society allows murderers, convicted felons all sorts; even child molesters get married and bring children. The fact is that many gay couples raise children, adopted and occasionally their own from failed attempts at heterosexual marriages. Lots and lots of scientific studies have shown that the outcomes of the children raised in the homes of gay and lesbian couples are just as good as those of straight couples. No matter what book you use in your courses, teaching the same techniques every semester can become dull. A couple of terms back, I decided to try something new. For their persuasive essay, I have students compose their own infomercial and write a script for their product. First, they have to come up with a product on their own. It can be something completely fanciful or a way to improve upon an existing product. Humor is encouraged, but I stress that all portions of the argument must be in place. Those elements include providing a response to a problem, focusing on the future, and centering on a particular audience. In responding to a problem, the team of 3-4 students must show how the need or problem affects its targeted audience. They must explain why the need is significant. They must say why the competitions solution does not measure up. The presentation itself must include both before and after evidence. They must stress the urgency of acting now and include extras to sweeten the deal. I offer the students a lot of freedom in composing their infomerical. They can either film the entire thing (Im continually amazed at how proficient they are with movie-making programs. Even those on their iPhones often turn our very well), they can do a live action/audience interaction performance, or blend both film and live action. Although they may ad-lib during their presentations, a script must be provided to me beforehand, and they must identify the parts of the argument each line is addressing in the margins. The infomericals should run from about 7-10 minutes. Depending on the size of your class and the length of your sessions, you may need   a couple of days to get them all done. I have 50-minute classes and we usually take two days. To get them started, I show them two classic infomericals. One is a real, The Hawaiian Chair, and one is a parody from Saturday Night Live, The Bass-o-matic. Without question, this is the most fun we have all term. Here is one my classes created just a few weeks ago.   Not only is it hysterical, but they manage to cover all the points of argument admirably. Of course, historical accounts point out that the oppression that the English penal laws placed upon the Irish Catholics not only did this but it also forced many to have to live extremely poor lives and abandon their traditional Gaelic language as well. The Irish Catholics had poor dwellings and many times the farm animals were inside the mud huts with these people due to the cruelty that English laws had brought down upon them. Much of the food was only vegetables with their main source being potatoes but when disease struck this crop it resulted in the "deaths of 2.5 million Irish Catholics" (MacManus 1974, pg. 112). In history this marks what is known as, "The Great Famine" (MacKay 1992, pg. 27). The Irish farmers did have other crops and livestock but they were all shipped to England as rent for the landlords. Without the rent money the starving Irish could not even afford to live in a home and would have been homeless on top of this horrible famine. Due to the many atrocities that these various penal codes inflicted upon Irish Catholics there were militia groups that were formed, with one having been mentioned in the introduction of this research. The truth to this matter is that England wanted total domination of Ireland and inflicted very harsh demands onto the people of the country. It is quite natural that there would be rebellion from the citizens of Ireland in order to try and maintain their own religious beliefs and laws in their land, which even today still goes on even though a Republic was formed. Another group that developed due to the escalating violence in the 18th century was the, "IRA-Irish Republican Army" (O'Neill et al 1980, pg. 133). This group and others like it were formed to initially protect the people but in actuality these groups and others were driven by the religious sanctions and political influences that have been central to the conflict in Ireland since as far back as the 16th century (O'Neill et al 1980, pg. 133). (pg. 404). He constantly struggled with the "henpecking" of his wife. Van Winkle found refuge and comfort going squirrel shooting with his dog. "Rip Van Winkle" depicts a story of a man longing to be free, and of the transformation that occurs to him and the town. Van Winkle "would have whistled life away" (pg. 404) had it not been for his wife . This served as a foreshadow for what was to come. Van Winkle wanted peace and to be left alone. He was like a kid; he often "made their playthings, taught them to fly kites and shoot marbles..." (pg. 403). He always did what could "be got with least thought or trouble," (pg.404) just as a child often does. He just "shrugged his shoulders...but said nothing," (pg. 404) to Dame Van Winkle's lectures. He was tired of hearing her, yet did nothing to change his behaviors or at least to try to please her. Van Winkle did "dream" his life away. He was gone for twenty years and returns to find his town and life different from how he had left it. I believe he just left one day and before he knew it, twenty years had past. Dame Van Winkle represented the Revolutionary War. "The changes of states and empires made but little impression on him," (pg. 412) but he did displease the "petticoat government." He describes the government as if it were a woman. "Petticoat" is a representation of Dame Van Winkle. Van Winkle pays no attention to his wife nor does he fight back, just as he did not fight in the war. Or, was this his war he was battling? When Van Winkle reflects on top of the mountain, "he heaved a heavy sigh when he thought of encountering the terrors of Dame Van Winkle." (pg. 406) "Terrors" come to mind when one thinks of war. Van Winkle doesn't regard Dame as his wife, rather he thinks of her as "Dame Van Winkle," with no affection.
